Math Moment

Red Cross Donations

I got to wondering how much money the Red Cross has collected for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The number is at the bottom of the Red Cross page - $609.7 million as of September 12, updated daily. Ask your kids what number that is (609,700,000). Kids get used to seeing numbers expressed certain ways, but of course there are many ways to express a number.

There are lots of other good numbers on this page - all big, and you know how kids like big numbers.

Activity: Doing Good Together

I was so excited to receive my first issue of the Jenny Friedman's Doing Good Together newsletter via yesterday's e-mail, full of ideas and resources for families who want to volunteer together. I've been a fan of Jenny Friedman and her Doing Good Together site every since I interviewed her about her book The Busy Family's Guide to Volunteering. She's wise and passionate about volunteering and full of really do-able ideas for doing good in the world, even if you're very busy.

Her site has tons of ideas and resources. You can subscribe to her newsletter on this page:

Here's a link to my article about Jenny Friedman:

Why Is it So? TV series

These are a hoot! Now available online are 12 episodes of this physics demonstration TV show that ran in Australia from 1963-1986. Working in a no-frills, physics-classroom set, crazy-enthusiastic mad scientist Professor Julius Sumner Miller performs demonstrations of electricity, chemistry, mechanics, and other physics phenomena. Flitting between experiment and chalkboard, he holds forth in a booming voice to two fresh-faced boys, who smile and pretend they understand what he's talking about. Your kids will love the hokeyness and probably the physics as well.

How Wolves Communicate

Have your kids ever heard a wolf howl? Well, if not you can fix that today - this site has a couple of great recordings of wolves and pups. You'll also find lots of interesting information about the many ways wolves communicate, including the meanings of various body positions.
