It's Our Birthday!

This week marks the one-year anniversary of our first issue. We will be holding our Anniversary Giveaway in two weeks, on November 1. All subscribers are automatically eligible to win. We've already received several of the donated prizes, and more are on the way. Prizes include books, gift certificates, and more.

If you would like to promote your small business by donating a prize, it's not too late! Just let me know by e-mail. You do not have to donate one of your own products - you can also donate goodies such as gift certificates for online book sellers. Either way we'll generously plaster your name on our home page and in Big Learning News.

In case you missed our Birthday Wish List, you can find it at the end of this week's issue.

Register your family for the National Student/Parent Mock Election

October 28 is Mock Election Day, and it's not too late for your family or school to participate. Once you register, you and your kids will be eligible to vote (either online or by phone, TTD, fax, or email) for the candidates and issues that appear on your state's official ballot. The ballot also contains an opinion poll so you and the kids can express your views on important national issues. Even though the voting has no bearing on the real election, kids will enjoy the experience of casting a ballot and making their voices heard.

This is a great hands-on way to interest your kids in the election and the national political landscape.

Book Review

Kids' Pumpkin Projects: Planting and Harvest Fun by Deanna F. Cook, illustrated by Kate Flanagan (Williamson, 1998)

Ages 4-10

Kids love pumpkins, so Pumpkin Projects offers a cornucopia of pumpkin-related Big Learning opportunities. The book cleverly takes advantage of various properties of pumpkins - their size, shape, and quick growth - to catapult kids into math, science, gardening, cooking and craft projects.

Although much of the book deals with growing pumpkins from seed, there's plenty of harvest season delight, including advice on preserving pumpkins and saving seeds to plant next spring, carving and decorating advice, and plenty of recipes.
