This lush history of jazz starts in Africa before the slave ships, and takes kids all the way to the Hip Hop present. Each page brings a different era to life through Valasquez's vivid oil paintings and Weatherford's verse:

"This is Harlem where Duke was king,
Lady was crowned, and Count ruled swing,
Cab Calloway hollered 'Hi-de-ho!'
and Ella scatted in the spotlight's glow."

The only thing that could have made this book better is a CD of music selections from each era. But Weatherford provides the next best thing on her website: a discography and timeline you can use to explain and bring the book to life. You can find that here:
